An Unnamed Shinigami debuted in the Death Note anime film Death Note Relight 1: Visions of a God which only aired in Japan. Like Ryuk, he too was bored with theShinigami Realm. This Shinigami has a skeletal figure and dons a coat, a pair of goggles, uses a tie as a headband and carries a large skeletal object which he uses like a hammer. He takes an interest in Ryuk's visit to the human realm, and bribes Ryuk with a ShinigamiApple in exchange for information how to undertake passage into the human world. Ryuk accepts, and begins to tell the story of Light Yagami's legend in regards to the Death Note. Before Ryuk can finish, however, the Unnamed Shinigami is gone, leaving the Shinigami Realm with his sights set on the Human World.
Members of the fan base have theorized that this Unnamed Shinigami may be the reincarnation of Light Yagami. This is largely due to fifteen pieces of evidence:
The coat he wears looks very similar to the one Light was wearing when he died.
He walks up stairs to meet Ryuk, which could be seen as a subtle reference to Light's death.
The way he tosses the apple to Ryuk, as Light did when alive.
A red tie (which looks like Light's) is wrapped around the Shinigami's head.
The Shinigami walks into a bright flash of light at the top of the stairs.
The fact that he inexplicably knows Ryuk's love for apples without asking the other Shinigami.
The fact that Ryuk says "Light" after the Unnamed Shinigami leaves.
The red eyes that in the anime shows Light's 'Kira' personality or Light Shinigami Eyes
He carries a scythe, similar to how Light does in some pieces of artwork.
The limp displayed while walking up the stairs is similar to the way Light limped out of the warehouse.
The Shinigami's mouth is shaped like Light's "Kira" smile.
The Unnamed Shinigami does not stay to hear the end of Ryuk's story, yet he is very interested about the human world... If he is the reincarnation of Light, he knows how the story ends and does not want or need to hear about it.
After looking at his own Death Note, Ryuk speaks to Light as if he was there; "You were not God. You were just...gone already?" This could mean Ryuk was addressing the unnamed Shinigami as Light or that he was simply reminiscing.
Light is standing in the Shinigami Realm during the end of the second Intro (possibly relating to the Death Note alternative ending).
The Shinigami sports a messenger bag almost identical to the one Light often carried with him in Season One.
The 'Light' theory is further supported by Ryuk's statement in his first conversation with Light:
"Do not assume that a human who has used a Death Note can go to Heaven or Hell."
This particular rule does not apply to being sent to Purgatory, also known as the Shinigami Realm. This would explain what happens after death to humans that have used a Death Note, as Purgatory (Mu) is neither good or evil. In this realm, 'living' means having an empty existence of nothingness amidst the grey, grunge and greed of the Shinigami Realm.
Also, this does not suggest that all Shinigami were once Humans. Instead, the intent could be that someShinigami were once Death Note users.
However, it is never directly stated in Death Note whether or not the Unnamed Shinigami is the reincarnation of Light Yagami. In fact, the end rules of the notebook (volume 12) clearly state: "After death [of a human], the place they go is Mu (nothingness)." and "Once dead, they can never come back to life." These rules may only apply to the resurrection of a dead body (as in the eraser from the Pilot chapter).
Nevertheless, some have theorized that the 'nothingness' described in the final rule could be the Shinigami Realmfor humans that have used Death Notes, and never coming back to life could mean being reincarnated as aShinigami. Although Light may be the exception to these rules, further information has yet to be revealed by eitherOhba or Obata.
Light Yagami's reincarnation exclusive to Anime
There is evidence that it is possible that the Death Note Anime and the Manga are two different realities. Comparing the Anime and Manga there are slight differences that suggest the makers of the anime wanted to adapt the Manga towards their own satisfactions. Satisfactions that wanted Light Yagami to have an Afterlife (as aShinigami) unlike the nothingness explained in the Manga. The evidence for this belief is:
In the Manga ending Light’s death all takes place in the warehouse where he was finally unmasked as Kira, and it’s where Ryuk says to light that all Humans go to “MU (Nothingness)”. However in the Anime ending Light escapes the warehouse and later dies on a stairway and Ryuk’s statement of “MU (Nothingness)” was not said at all. This difference made was possibly because the Death Note Anime makers wanted Light to have an afterlife, so they ended it in a way that made the entire “MU (Nothingness)” irrelevant in the Anime therefore this could have lead to the existence of the Unnamed Shinigami.
In the anime ending episode of Death Note, L’s spirit is seen standing in front of Light as he is dying on a warehouse stairway, which suggests that there, must be a Heaven in that reality due to the fact that L has a spirit.
In the anime version of Death Note, Teru Mikami commits suicide with the fountain pen he used to write on the notebook and dies in the warehouse (it is seen that blood goes flying out from his chest) allowing Light to flee the warehouse. However in the Manga, Teru Mikami mysteriously dies in prison days after Light's Death.
And of course the unnamed Shinigami itself was only ever seen in the Death note Anime and never the Manga.
These facts suggest that the Anime and Manga are different realities and can support the idea that Light Yagamicould have indeed been reincarnated as the unnamed Shinigami seen in the film Death Note Relight 1: Visions of a God.
However the Rule shown after the commercial break in the final Anime episode called New World stated that "All humans, without exception, will eventually die. When they die they go to MU (nothingness)." But due to the evidence against the MU (Nothingness) rule overall, it is still not concrete proof to prove that argument.

15 year old Near is seen playing with this when Roger calls him to the office. Near seems to have finished the puzzle, but when Mello argues about L’s death, he empties all the puzzle pieces out saying, “If you cannot win at the game, if you cannot solve the puzzle, you are just a loser”. This is the first toy we see of Near.
Card Deck (61)
Near is seen playing with cards when he’s talking to the FBI agent. He made a sort of little pyramid out of it, and on the phone he’s talking about Sayu’s kidnapping, and the notebook. It seems that he is putting two cards at a time, with one hand. while sitting very much like L, but with one leg. It’s one of the few toys he has while sitting up.
Match Sticks (62,27)
At least, they look like match sticks. Here, Near is arranging them in a certain manner to make towers. Before piling them on in this delicate way, however, he seems to have pre-arranged them in a solitary manner on the table itself. I don’t know what he is exactly trying to accomplish with this. It’s one more of those few toys that need a hard surface to work on.
Darts (63/64,28)
For this, Near sits on a chair and seems to have a huge supply of darts. We see him with the dart at first, after which he stops to sit down and talk to Light for the first time. After the conversation, he picks up the dart again. The target seems to be attached to the wall in front of him. The target area is like a little shrine, and is most probably electronic. When he first is seen playing with it, he’s speaking to Rester about the SPK’s ultimate goal of obtaining the notebook and bringing Kira to justice. Near doesn’t seem to be very good at darts though, as he missed, and we see many lying on the floor.
Dice (66, 28)
Near has somehow got his hands on probably hundreds or thousands of dice, and is using them for something entirely new. He seems to be making a little city out of the dice, piling them one at a time as towers, while on the phone with Light. However, as he tells Light that he is basically useless, people in the SPK suddenly die around him, and he destroys his little city of dice, saying that he is “beaten”, with a sad (cute) face XD. When Light tells him about working together, he holds up a single pile of dice in his hand and stares it, then piles on top of that as well. In the anime, the dice were used as a great effect during the time when the SPK members died. They fell as did the members.
Jumbo Plane and Ball Robot (67, 30)
After Near looks at the information the NPA sent him, he starts playing with his robot and plane. Basically, he just whirls them around and makes them fly in the air and stuff (like a little kid). When Light, who hides the information about the shinigami eyes, tells him that he believes Kira probably has a different notebook which allows you to only kill with eyes, Near collides and plane with the robot, who falls into the pieces. He quickly puts it back together, which can mean Near probably assembled both the plane and robot since has all of the supplies on the table. The intersting thing about this, we see Near as a cute child in the Jump chapter, but somehow, in the tanks, his expressions are a bit changed, and he looks much more serious (as seen in the third picture as an example – the first being the tank pic, second being Jump). Only the robot appeared in the anime.
Wooden Dart (71)
At first, I thought it was a copy of a missile (maybe it was), but it was a dart since the target could be seen in a small panel. Near ends up carving this thing when he’s told about the president’s death and the people who died with their helmets taken off. Near is carving this missile with what looks like a knife, although it’s a dart it’s pretty pre-made, so another one of Near’s toys is making these things. He ends up throwing this, towards the target and misses. I must say he really likes his rolling chair.
Lego Fort Space Station w/ Toys (75,30)
Basically, Near built himself a little fort out of Lego pieces, in which he made room for himself to sit in. I call it a little space station since it looks like one of those places you see in Star Wars, with the round things, satellites, and everything. Along with the fort, he has a couple of toys, including a dinosaur (or as user tantopat pointed out, perhaps a parody of xenomorph from the “Alien” films), and then a plane and robot. However, the important ones include the grim reaper and the police man. This chapter takes place right after Soichiro’s death, hence, Near is a bit pissed about it, since the NPA gave “Kira” back his notebook too easily, and when Rester asks to talk about the case, and he goes on to describe it, they tell him to skip that part, making him a bit angry to yell “I won’t skip!” and destroys part of the fort with his robot. Then, he says that Kira and the second L are working together, pulling off the top of the police robot revealing a skull. He then lay down in his lego place, with this police-skull toy, and explains about the percentage, then replaces the head with a normal head that’s smiling, when he says that the 2nd L is taking a passive role in order to not arouse suspicion, and then he says he will thoroughly investigate, while holding the skull head of the police robot he just popped out.
Choo Choo Train Set (76,30)
Near also has a train set!! The train set itself is on lego platforms, and then the tracks are above that. Near made the set go into an ellipse, and then sat right in the middle of it. To the right side of the train set, there are lego buildings as well, which the train zips through. Also, according to the sound effects, it makes the “choo choo” noise like any train. When the train runs through, he turns his head to watch it, while telling Rester that Mello will want the SPK’s information and that they should follow that. The train set is also detachable (the cars) so Near can insert or remove cars at will. In the anime, the train tracks go in a perfect circle, and have different layers. They aren’t as interesting in my opinion.
Action Gundam thing with gun (76/77,30)
When Mello comes to see Near for the first time since he left Wammy’s orphanage, Near is seen playing with this little Gundam-type action figure with a huge gun. He actually first was playing with the gun by itself, and then puts it in the hands of the robot, playing with it while he talked to Mello, his back turned to him. In the anime, you see this at the end of the episode, and with Mello he’s playing with the train set.
Water Pistol (77)
In this panel, you can see Near using a water pistol to shoot his fellow robots. This was actually a pretty minor toy that even I didn’t notice. A BIG thanks to Riyd for pointing it out!
Tarot Cards (78,30)
After Mello tells Near of the fake rules, Near is seen playing with this. What he does is, arrange them in a big circle around him, face down, with the extra’s in a little deck in front of him. When he is talking to Light, he’s asking about the shinigami and the fake rules, which explains the shinigami/grim reaper Tarot that he is looking at (and has many of those). He tells Light that he believes that Kira is among them, and along with the shinigami card, and skull card, says that he is making the shinigami tell a lie.
Space Shuttle Enterprise (79)
I must say, when I first saw this thing, it took me a while to figure out what it is. Basically, it’s a landing runway for space shuttles, along with a tower attached with a sattelite, and a rocket launch site. Near is playing with this when he meets Mogi through Mello’s phone call. The space shuttle was in his hand, and he was playing around with it until he threw it into the little area. Unlike most of the little areas he creates, Near didn’t make himself a space to sit right within it. Instead, he sat on the outskirts and was playing with the area, until Mogi comes in and then he has to pay attention to him.
Robot Squad (79/80/81/82,31)
Near is playing with a little robot squad when Damegawa and all come to overtake him at the headquarters. The robots themselves, we don’t see him playing too much, though he lines them up in a row in the midst of lego buildings, and then grabs them to take them with him when he leaves for a new location. Once there, he puts them in front of his computer again and then plays with them, making them fly through the air. These robots are much more diversified, one of them might be that gundamn-type from before, but another looks like lego blocks with a “T” on his head(actually he reminds me of Blocken from Shaman King). It’s really cute how he take them with him in his arms with his battle suit on the way to the new location. So cute XD. The robot with a “T” on his forehead seems to be his favorite, since he shows this when talking about the 2nd Kira to Aizawa.
Dice Boxes (81/82,31)
Unlike the real dice before (though I’m really wondering now if they were real dice) these are boxes that look like little dice. Near piles these up while one of the members of the SPK holds the phone to his ear to talk. The dice boxes, soon enough, are shown to contain dice within them, which Near empties out into his hand, when he tells Aizawa that he lied in order to push him to make up his mind. When Aizawa comes to meet him, Aizawa tells him the details of L capturing Light and Misa (though not mentioningWHO they were), and then goes on to say they were released. At this point, Near opens a dice box up, which contains a skull dice on it, and asks him the details of the release. After Aizawa leaves, he puts this die on the information sheet of Yagami Soichiro, beside Yagami Light’s name, saying that Light Yagami is Kira.
Jet (83)
Near is seen holding a Jet plane in this chapter, when he asks Lester to fly over to Japan. Talk about props and presentation.
Finger Puppets (85/95/96,34/35/36/37)
These finger puppets are what appear in the manga the most. They are made of mold (thank you Al for pointing out the mold seen in V.11/pg164), since in one of the chapters, you see Near actually filing away at them, meaning they not only were made by Near, but he also made them to stand on their own or fit on your finger. They consist of everyone who is involved with the Kira case (which is why there are so many images above to show this) and in actuality, it is from the L finger puppet that the L-mask later on, is based on. In the last parts of Death Note, these are the toys that accompany Near. He usually leaves these puppets on a chess board type thing, and uses them to better explain the scenarios to the rest of the SPK members.
Racing Ducks (86/88)
Near has a bunch of ducks that he places in a child-sized pool with water. The pool itself is inside the headquarters (well, actually, wherever they moved), and he likes to grab them one by one and place them into the pool. These ducks aren’t normal ducks though, they are remote controlled, so he sits down, one foot on the floor, and another up (like usual), and uses the remote control to race them across the small pool. The remote control is a complicated contraption, as it has a bunch of knobs and buttons, probably for different speeds and so forth. The ducks even have little wings attached to them. In later chapters, Near even piles them on top of each other like a balancing tower.
Radio Tower & Paper Version (89,33)
After much contemplation, I figured out that there were two towers, since I was quite confused what was going on. As shown in the image (first) there is a tower, colorful and all, that is probably made of blocks. While Near is speaking to Rester, he is studying this tower intently, and there are a bunch of his other toys surrounding it. Then, when he phones Light he is in front of another half done tower, and has paper around him. While he talks to Light he begins to cut the paper pretty quickly (without even looking sometimes) and then after he finished what he did was actually make a piece of the half done tower. He also had some glue around the tower, which makes my assumption that he was probably trying to replicated that block tower in his own way, out of pure paper, and a glue stick. Talk about origami skills.
Lego Figurines w/ gun (90/91/92/94,33/34)
These figures look very much like Lego pieces. The cool thing is that we actually see in the chapter when he first gets them. Near actually opens a suitcase, where these are arranged, along with a little building that says NHN on it. He takes the figures out, and writes on them— decorating. There are different ones, which are mostly pictured above. To play with them, he arranges them on white pieces of the floor, and then draws on this floor (I don’t know what material it is), with a marker, to explain the scenarios of X and L-Kira. Along with these figurines also comes a cool gun that shoots a bottle plug (is that what it’s called?) at the figures, to knock them down in order to prove a point. All in all these are simple ways that Near uses, and these little Lego figurines are the center of the chapters with finding out who Mikami is.
DVD Cases (91,33)
Although this is not really a toy, this is one of the things Near is observing and playing with, so hence I’m going to place it here. Near surrounds himself with DVD recordings so that he can search for the identity of “X-Kira”. He digs through these piles of DVD’s later on, and also uses his little figurines to explain things to Rester, on top of these.
Christmas Tree (91,33/34)
Near is seen decorating a Christmas tree, which is quite understandable since he was brought up in London, plus it is around Christmas time. His Christmas tree is very weird, since it has some random things hanging from it, like this huge ornament that is actually a pinball of Baseball (thank you Gio for pointing this out), a gameboy, a reindeer plushie, and all sorts of other things. He also adds to this Christmas tree, his little lego pieces. There are toys surrounding it as well, I hope he’s not giving gifts to himself :P lol.
Marble Machine (95,34)
At least, I think this is a marble machine. From what Near is doing, this machine is probably not powered by any wires, since none can be found, but it does look quite complicated not to be powered by nothing. What it actually looks like, to me, is sort of like a marble (or ball) obstacle course. Since there are tubes, levers, weighing pans, and all sorts of other things connected. Near sits in front of this and puts the marble down the vertical tubule in the middle, which probably makes the thing travel through. I’m sure the direction it goes and whatever is probably able to be controlled by the various levers, and since there are so many openings it only makes sense this way. Judging from the marbles on the floor, after it all goes through it probabyl just empties out on the floor as well, since also there is a slide that comes up behind near and the marbles are all in front of that.
Super Heroes (96,35)
Here, Near is lying on the floor playing with, what looks like, a bunch of super hero action figures. He has this little platform he puts one of them on, but he also likes to make it fly through the air. The interesting thing, there aren’t too many toys that Near sprawls on the floor to play with, and this is one of these few in which he does. Of course, this probably has to do with the fact that he already had his plan formulated by this time, and all he had to do now was to wait to see it Gevanni was gonna die, so hence he just relaxed during that time. But other than that, these just look like normal action figure toys to me. One of the action figures can even hold a thing in his hand. These figures are actually of Char Aznable from the Gundam Series (thank you Heather for pointing this out.
L Mask (100/101,36)
The L Mask. This mask is the last real new toy we see Near playing with in Death Note. It looks like the finger-puppet L face he had last time, and it’s actually pretty scary. He uses it to cover his face for 1/2 hour from Light to prevent being killed. Finally after a half-hour he throws it aside, and has a really evil and sadistic smile on his face near my love, you are so hot! in either case. This was probably the weirdest toy Near ever had.
